Munich Airport and Lufthansa have created the strategic foundation for further shared growth. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) marks the start of planning for an expansion of Terminal 2.

Munich Airport and Lufthansa are jointly realizing the «T-Pier», a new pier that will expand the satellite building of Terminal 2 and create capacity for up to ten million additional passengers a year.
The Terminal 2 system at Munich Ariport represents a unique, successful partnership between Munich Airport and Lufthansa. The terminal has been awarded five stars in the renowned Skytrax ranking for many years now.
The partnership with Lufthansa allows us to significantly strengthen and expand this international hub airport. It is a milestone in the site’s development. For our guests, that means further improvements to connectivity and more diverse offerings, along with even more convenience.

The Terminal 2 system is operated by Terminal 2 Gesellschaft, the terminal’s operating company, with 60 percent held by Flughafen München GmbH and 40 percent by Deutsche Lufthansa AG. A project that began in 2003 with the startup of Terminal 2 is now a key part of Munich’s success as a location: a joint venture that is one-of-a-kind within Europe and combines responsibility, quality, and long-term prospects.

Terminal 2 has an annual capacity of 36 million passengers. That has established Munich as a premium hub for Lufthansa and a 5-star airport, making it one of the best airports in the world. The hub is known for its high-quality service, numerous flight connections, and modern ambiance.

As further visible evidence of the partnership’s success, there is the Terminal 2 satellite, which has played a central role for the Munich hub airport since its opening in April 2016. Around 93 million passengers and about 672,000 flight movements in the past ten years highlight its operational importance. Today, about 36 percent of airline passengers and 30 percent of take-offs and landings are in the satellite in T2. More than half of the fliers are transfer passengers.

To account for growing passenger figures, especially on long-haul routes and in hub traffic, Munich Airport and Lufthansa are preparing for the next development step: expanding the satellite building by adding a new «T-Pier». The new terminal area will connect at a right angle to the existing T2 satellite building on the east side. It will provide the basis for more operational stability, better operating quality, and an even more convenient travel experience.

Strategy
Long-haul routes as a strategic growth driver
More long-haul connections and an even stronger network with the world – that is our goal.
Movements in long-haul traffic, 2019-2025: a new high was reached in 2025.
Renewing and deepening the joint venture through 2056 will improve our competitiveness and lay the foundation for further growth. One important part of the agreement is the planned expansion of Lufthansa’s long-haul fleet at the Munich location. Long-haul traffic continues to show dynamic growth, strengthening our role as an international hub airport. In 2025, around half a million more intercontinental passengers traveled to and from Munich Airport than in the previous record-setting year of 2019 – a clear sign of the location’s attractiveness and the airport’s performance.
The trend for intercontinental passengers: noticeable growth among private travelers.
