Materiality: analysis of stakeholder expectations
Sustainable corporate management Summary
Our sustainability strategy takes into account the material topics and includes the measures for their implementation, as well as the targets defined in the sustainability program. Topics are material if they influence the sustainable development of the airport’s economic, ecological, or social environment. Munich Airport has defined key figures that make the achievement of strategic targets and the effectiveness of measures measurable. In addition to EBT (earnings before taxes) and the metric for customer satisfaction PEI (Passenger Experience Index), CO₂ reductions and the Lost Time Incident Frequency Rate (LTIF) are also used as key performance indicators.
Sustainability is an integral part of our organizational structure. In the sustainability committee, we consolidate cross-divisional expertise: colleagues from different functions regularly exchange views on ongoing initiatives, current developments, and strategically relevant topics. As multipliers, they ensure that the content of the sustainability strategy is consistently embedded and implemented within their respective areas of responsibility. Overall strategic management is carried out by the Sustainability Board. Within this framework, the executive board, members of top management, and designated subject-matter experts advise on key fields of action and future priorities of our sustainability agenda.
Materiality process: the basis of our sustainability strategy Summary
In fiscal year 2026, 15 material sustainability topics form a core component of the airport’s sustainability activities. Any adjustments result from an ongoing assessment process and can be found in the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Index. These sustainability topics are illustrated in the materiality matrix.

Rating
Internal subject-matter experts assessed the material sustainability topics based on the materiality matrix prepared in the previous year. The perspective of external stakeholders was incorporated by those experts who, due to their professional responsibilities, are in close dialogue with the respective stakeholder groups and can accurately reflect their positions. In addition, all participants conducted an assessment from the perspective of Group employees. The analysis confirms the consistently high relevance of the existing material sustainability topics. The key topic areas retain their original importance for our stakeholders and remain decisive for the sustainable further development of the company. «Accessible Airport» was identified as a new material topic. This places greater focus on Munich Airport’s social responsibility for people with disabilities. The goal is to enable all individuals – regardless of their personal circumstances – to use the airport without restriction.
Implementation
For each material topic, Munich Airport has developed specific management approaches that comply with the requirements of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI Standards). These approaches, together with their related goals and measures, are published as part of integrated reporting.
Operationalization
The sustainability program serves as the Group-wide roadmap for sustainable corporate development. It contains concrete targets and measures that are of high relevance for the coming years. As part of annual coordination processes, the strategic sustainability program is updated with the respective divisions and target achievement is assessed.
Further development
The planned EU directive on sustainability reporting, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), will fundamentally change corporate reporting. It requires companies to disclose environmental, social, and governance data in the Management Report and to have this information subject to external audit.
