Integrated Report 2025

Digitalization and automation

Automation and robotics in operations Summary

The autonomous apron

In 2025, the «Autonomous Apron» program was advanced. Use cases include autonomous baggage transporters and cargo vehicles, the detection of foreign objects on the apron and taxiways, as well as solutions for pushback and ground handling. At the same time, we technically prepared or continued several pilot projects – such as in autonomous cargo transport and fence patrols. In addition, the strategic foundation was established for an AI-supported apron control system that will enable automatic route planning and collision avoidance in the future.

Remote-controlled passenger boarding bridges

In the first quarter of 2025, Munich Airport successfully completed the pilot test of a remote-controlled passenger boarding bridge. The bridge, controlled via joystick from the control center, was operated under real conditions – including rain, snow, and varying lighting conditions – and monitored using cameras and sensor technology. The tests confirmed the great potential of the technology: the remote-controlled bridge increases safety during docking and undocking procedures, stabilizes processes, and relieves ground handling personnel. Innovative passenger boarding bridges are intended to be integrated into regular operations in the future.

Digital solutions: passengers benefit Summary

Pilot project: autonomous wheelchairs

With the pilot of autonomous wheelchairs in Terminal 2, Munich Airport is taking another step toward forward-looking mobility services. The intelligent wheelchairs navigate independently from the pick-up point to the departure gate and then return autonomously to their base. This enables travelers with reduced mobility to move around comfortably and safely, while at the same time relieving employees in the Mobility Service.

«Passngr» app

The «Passngr» app, a digital platform for travelers that provides key information about flying, was further developed in 2025. «Passngr» offers real-time updates on departure and arrival times, navigation assistance in the terminal, current information on security screening, as well as exclusive offers in the catering and retail areas. In 2025, particular improvements were made to the quality of indoor maps and support for additional operating systems and devices was implemented.

Group-wide AI and data governance

In 2025, Munich Airport established the organizational and regulatory framework for the responsible use of AI. A new AI policy defines principles relating to autonomy, transparency, fairness, data protection, security, and sustainability. At the same time, the AI Expert Board established a structured evaluation and approval process for AI projects across the Group. This created standardized procedures that strengthen both legal certainty and acceptance of AI within the company. Clear rules, responsibilities, and shared standards ensure that data is used correctly, securely, and responsibly.
